Miss Charles

Welcome to FS1 where your learning journey begins. The days are full of fun, laughter, lots of time outside and getting messy. We can’t wait to welcome you to our beautiful school.

Meet your teacher

Mrs Farnell

Hello, my name is Mrs Farnell and I am a Foundation Stage teacher at Sandhill. I have worked at Sandhill for 15 years and have loved helping so many children begin their school journey. Foundation Stage is such an important part of a child’s school journey and is when a love of learning really begins. I enjoy everything about working in Foundation Stage but especially creative activities and reading. I will be the teacher in the Foundation Stage Hub on Mondays and Tuesdays and I can’t wait to share lots of stories with our children this year.

Miss Charles

Hello, my name is Miss Charles and I am another Foundation Stage teacher at Sandhill. I have worked at this school for 13 years and I am very excited for another year here. I will be your Foundation teacher for three days of the week. I am looking forward to meeting all of the children who are new to our school and seeing you build friendships with the oher children. We are going to have lots of fun with our learning this year through stories, paint and play. Out of school I have a one year old little boy who I love going on adventures with such as to the seaside, the park and to see the animals. I wonder if we will see any animals this year in Foundation too!

Meet your teaching assistant

SH - R Sahota (1)

Mrs Sahota

Hello, my name is Mrs Raj Sahota. I have been working in Rawmarsh Sandhill as a Foundation Stage Teaching Assistant for over a year.
I love working with young children and love to see how they grow and change in their early years. When I am not at school I love spending time with my son. We do lots of things together like cooking, crafting and playing games. I am really looking forward to welcoming back the children I already know from FS1 as well as new faces who are joining us in September.

Class Information

The school gates and doors open at 8.40am and will close at 8.50. The nursery children will be brought inside by their grown ups but in this time the adults of FS2 children will bring you to the classroom door where you will come in and organise yourself. You will have your own peg to hang your bag and coat and don’t forget to bring a bottle of water too! In September we will let you know our PE day for the FS2 children but over summer you may want to practise getting changed independently ready for this. Once the FS2 children are settled into school you will begin to bring home a reading book each week and you will have phonics work to practise recognising graphemes and saying the phonemes as well as writing them. Please make sure you are signed up to the Class Dojo app as we will post information and photos linked to our learning and we also love to see photos of adventures at home too! Some of the Nursery (FS1) children will go home at 11.30am and your grown up will enter the school grounds via the back gate. The main school day will finish at 3.15pm.

Areas of Learning

In the Foundation Stage Hub we will have lots of exciting and engaging topics and opportunities throught the year. We will begin our journey learning all about us – who we are, where we live, who is in our family and what we need to do to keep fit and healthy. If you would like to send in photographs via dojo of you and your family over the summer we would love to share these with your friends in September! Later in the year we may cover other topics such as transport, people who help us and the seaside. We will do lots of our learning through play, having many provision areas in our classroom including construction, role play, small world and workshop.
Every day in FS1 we will share stories, listen to rhymes and sing songs. We will do lots of counting and looking for patterns and shapes.

Every day in FS2 we will take part in phonics where we will be learning to read and write letters and sounds. We will continue to practise holding our pencils correctly and writing our names. Every day we will practise our fine motor skills, leading up to writing in full sentences by the end of the school year. We will focus on numbers to 5 to begin with in September in maths and will learn how to make these numbers in different ways.
